Job Description: Assistant Controller

Summary: Under the general direction of the Controller, but with a wide degree of creativity and latitude, performs a wide variety of tasks associated with running the accounting department and meeting the Company’s financial reporting requirements. Relies on broad experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.

Essential Duties:

Responsibilities include:

Prepares and consolidates financial statements.

Establishes and maintains internal controls.

Manages all aspects of the general ledger.

Analyzes and implements new accounting principles.

Assists with the budget process.

Serves as a liaison to the internal and external auditors.

Supervises the payroll, accounts payable and general ledger departments.

Member of the Company’s rate case team when rate cases are filed.

Member of the Company’s technology team.

Responsible for the overall integrity, knowledge and training employees in the use the General Ledger, Payroll and Accounts Payable applications.

Must be discreet - Works with highly confidential information.

Performs any other duties as may be assigned by management or as directed by position responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Requires at minimum a bachelor’s degree in accounting. A master’s degree in accounting or business administration (MBA) or a certified public accountant designation (CPA) preferred. At least 7 years of relevant experience in accounting.

Special Skills:

§ Strong analytical, technology, communication and organization skills.

§ Must possess knowledge of all aspects of accounting principles including:

§ SEC regulations

§ Utility accounting

§ Ability to work with all levels of management

§ Expert knowledge of computerized general ledger systems and applications which feed it.

§ Excellent technology skills including proficiency with spreadsheet and word-processing software.

§ Ability to work independently and exercise judgment.

§ Ability to present facts and recommendations in oral and written form.

§ Ability to define problems, collect data and establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

§ Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with other staff and employees and managers and officers at all levels.

§ Ability to maintain confidentiality of information.

§ Ability to work under pressure of tight deadlines

  • JD Edwards, Excel

Other Job Requirements: Must be willing to work evenings, weekends and holidays as the employer determines are necessary or desirable to meet its business needs.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; use hands and fingers to operate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
